In an unexpected turn of events, a robot employed by the Gumi City Council went defunct after falling down a flight of stairs on June 27. While some have sensationalized the event as a “robot suicide,” experts assert that it is more likely due to a technical malfunction or glitch.
The robot, part of the city hall staff since August 2023, was tasked with a variety of daily duties including document deliveries, providing information to residents, and promoting city initiatives. According to one of its coworkers, the robot had been working “diligently” since its introduction.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing the robot exhibit unusual behavior prior to the fall, such as circling in one spot as if confused. The incident occurred around 4 pm, with the robot ultimately found damaged and lying in the stairwell between the first and second floors of the council building.
The exact cause of the fall is currently under investigation. Officials believe it may have been caused by a navigational error, sensor failure, or a programming bug. “The robot’s pieces have been collected and will be analyzed by the company,” a city council official mentioned.
The robot, developed by Bear Robotics, a California-based startup, was notable for being the first of its kind in Gumi. Unlike typical robots, which are limited to a single floor, this robot was designed to navigate autonomously between floors using the elevator, making it a unique asset to the council. It operated from 9 am to 6 pm and was even issued a civil service officer card, akin to a human employee.
Bear Robotics is now working closely with the council to investigate the incident and to implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
South Korea, a global leader in robotics with the highest robot density in the world, continues to push the boundaries of automation technology. However, in light of the recent incident, the Gumi City Council has decided to temporarily halt its plans to introduce a second robot officer.
